Job Summary/Description

This position will assist in the coordination of teaching, instruction and special projects at the university Food Safety and Product Development Laboratory (FSPD) in terms of daily tasks, lab preparation, scheduling, research, extension/outreach and recruiting activities. Associate will be required to assist laboratory instruction and preparation, as well as help with research and outreach activities in meat and food science. Individual will assist with the instruction of meat/food science courses in meat judging and instruct students on proper harvest, fabrication, processing and packaging of meat products. Additionally, the associate will be required to coordinate outreach and recruiting initiatives of the Meat and Food Science Program and coordinate with ongoing Department of Agriculture recruiting and outreach.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

• Management and coordination of daily laboratory, research, judging and outreach/recruiting tasks are key roles of this position.
• The Research Associate & Food Safety and Product Development (FSPD) will work closely with Meat and Food Science faculty and the existing FSPD Laboratory Manager to:
  • Assist faculty in laboratory preparation and instruction; as well as, conduction implementation and completion of research projects, and assist in capacity building activities;
  • Instruct graduate and undergraduate students in the maintenance of the FSPD Laboratory Food Safety Plan (HACCP, SSOP, and GMP) to ensure compliance with USDA-FSIS guidelines, and instruct students in foot safety procedures;
  • Assist in the teaching and training of the meat judging by instruction on processing practices and procedures and practice preparation;
  • Assist with the continued development and preparation of the departmental judging program, specifically the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Program;
  • Assist with the coordination and conduction of targeted Meat and Food Science Program and Department of Agriculture community outreach and recruiting initiatives with focus on increasing underrepresented student admissions into departmental programs.

• The Research Associate should dedicated to excellence in research and teaching, with a strong commitment to high professional standards.

Minimum Qualifications

• While a Masters degree in Animal Science/Meat Science/Food Science is not required, candidates that have to potential to pursue Masters degree in the Ag department are preferred.
• The Research Associate (RA) position must have demonstrated abilities conducting research, scheduling and organizing outreach events, as well as, teaching experience in meat and food science courses.
• The RA must posses an outstanding work ethic and a willingness to participate as a member of a team.
• Excellent interpersonal, written communication skills and demonstrated technical excellence is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior participation on an Intercollegiate Meats Judging team is highly desired.
